On October 25, we went to the University of British Columbia to meet the Thunderbots, the student robotics team that won last season’s competition in the Small Size League of the International RoboCup in Sydney, Australia. Their robot plays the game of soccer and is completely automated! We were so lucky to have gotten the opportunity to meet the team!

We were given an insightful presentation about engineering and an engaging demo of their robot’s functions. Through the many questions we asked, we learned about how the Thunderbots approached the design process, how they come up with strategies for competition, what manufacturing techniques they used, how they automate and help their robots communicate, and how they wired their sophisticated electrical system… Some of us even got to drive their robots and kick around a “soccer ball” aka golf ball!

With the FRC season approaching just around the corner, having our team feeling inspired and excited to implement newfound knowledge to the building of our own robot is definitely awesome!

And to the UBC Thunderbots: Thank you for having us and good luck to your redesign and participation in the next RoboCup!
